One of the best experiences I've had in gaming if not the best. (Spoiler Lore explanation bellow)
I joined Final Fantasy 14 when Shadowbringers released, playing from beginning of Realm Reborn all the way to Shadowbringers doing all the side blue story content and Shadowbringer just felt the crescendo I was looking for.
I know for a fact that watching it will not give you the same amount of feelings and hype I've had for this game (in fact only half of Shadowbringer's story is in the voiced cutscenes) but I wanted to share it nonetheless.
I hope you enjoy it.
SPOILERS LORE SUMMARY BY ME, READ IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND:
Long ago, there was one world, and a race of humans that were complete beings. They lived forever, loved each other, understood each other, cared for each other (think of a perfect human that was them).
Their planet started to die and world ending events happening left and right.
To combat this, a group of 14 scholars of the highest intellects were tasked with coming up with a plan to advert the crisis.
The solution they came up with: To summon a being to become the will of the planet. Summoning this being however would require half of the population to sacrifice themselves to summon this being. The population willingly did it happily as it meant for the planet to live.
And thus Zodiark was born, the first and most powerful primal.
One of the 14 scholars did not agree with this plan and left.
With Zodiark summoned, the planet was saved from the crisis, but it it was still withering and dying. No winds were happening, plants were withering away no new life being born. So thus another half of the people then also willingly gave up their planet so that life could return from the planet.
And it did.
Life flourished, and the remaining 13 scholars decided that they would let the planet regrow and flourished. And then use all the new life energy to bring back the people that gave up their life for the planet.
However there were opposition to the plan, that the world should belong to the new people of the world, not the people who died (since they would have to sacrifice new life to bring back old ones that died)
And thus, the 14th member of the group who left earlier, summoned Hydaelyn the opposite of Zodiark.
Hydaelyn defeated Zodiark and split the world into 14, The Source, and 13 shards/reflections of the Source. But it also split the completed people of this world into 14.
The 14th scholar that summoned Hydaelyn, was the Warrior of Light. It was us. WE created Hydaelyn and WE created this world.
We also had our soul split into 14. One in the source (us), and 13 pieces of our souls in the 13 shards/reflections.
Only 3 people escaped the sundering of souls and was still a whole being. 3 of the 13 scholars, Hades/Emet Setch, Lahabrea, and Edilibus.
And thus the 3 decided to rejoin the 13 shards back into the Source. For the world to be whole again. For the people to be whole again.
Thus did they usher in 7 Calamities on the source. 7 Shards destroyed. 7 times the shards rejoined back to the source.
7 times did 7 warrior of lights(7 pieces of our souls) rejoined back to us, the Warrior of Light. We were 8/14 the entirety of the game up to the end of Shadowbringer. It is implied that only our soul gets rejoined, while the people of the source's soul do not get rejoined (it explains why we are so powerful through out the entire story, we are 8/14 of a person in a world full of 1/14).
And in Shadowbringer, Ardbert IS us, he was the warrior of light in the 1st. He was/is 1/14 of our soul in the 1st. His entire story mirrors of our own story in the source. Rejoining us in the final battle, he helped complete our soul just enough for us to contain the light.
It also was able to complete us enough for Hades to finally recognize/see us for the 14th scholar who summoned Hydaelyn.
As Hades said, the victor was the hero, and the defeated the villain. For both sides was justified.
In Hades eyes, his friends, his loved ones, his family, his entire race gave up their lives so that these broken fragmented people could live so that they kill each other, hate each other, not understand each other and live short pitiful lives. He does not see them as living people, and thus he would sacrifice all of them so that he can have his people back. The people that actually matter, the people that are actually complete beings. Not these fragmented 1/14 people. THE REAL people.
In our eyes, he would have to kill millions upon millions for his dream. Would kill the future and present for the past. We would lose OUR loved ones, our friends, and our race, for his.
It was all matters of perspective. We fought to protect our world. Hades fought to bring back his.
But...
We created this world. This was our story. This was our future. We fight :For those we have lost. For those we can yet save
We are the Warrior of Light.
