Jennifer Homans, the dance critic for The New Yorker, discusses her new book Mr. B: George Balanchine’s 20th Century, the first major biography of arguably the greatest choreographer of all time. Based on more than 100 interviews and research in archives across Russia, Europe, and the Americas, Mr. B brings to life Balanchine’s tumultuous life story and the making of his extraordinary ballets, including his iconic version of The Nutcracker. Homans, a former professional dancer who trained at George Balanchine’s School of American Ballet, is also the author of the widely acclaimed Apollo’s Angels: A History of Ballet. She joins in conversation with Pamela Newkirk, journalist, NYU professor, and author of Diversity Inc.: The Failed Promise of a Billion-Dollar Business, a Time Magazine Must-Read Book of 2019. Newkirk’s previous book, Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga, was completed while she was a Leon Levy Biography Fellow.
Presented with the Leon Levy Center for Biography.
