Kristi visits with Laura Weddle, Extension Specialist for Farm Stress and Rural Mental Health, to discuss National Depression Screening Day.
National Depression Screening Day is observed on October 6th. Back in 1946, the National Mental Health Act became law and from that, the National Institute of Mental Health was established. A few years later in 1946, Mental Health Week was created to address symptoms of anxiety and depression. From that week, an entire month was established. From there, as awareness grew throughout the nation, National Depression Screening Day came to be, and depression screenings are now incorporated into primary care. What signs of depression can we recognize? Not everyone who is depressed experiences each or all these symptoms. Each person is different, but it is important to recognize each of these symptoms: Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood; Feelings of hopelessness, irritability, frustration, or restlessness;
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness; Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities; Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling "slowed down"; Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions; Sleep disruptions; Changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes; and Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts. There are several ways we can observe National Depression Screening Day. As part of the day, communities, workplaces, and schools are encouraged to screen for depression. We encourage you to learn more about the symptoms and what type of resources are available in your community. Reach out to someone who you may think is experiencing depression. Let them know you are there for support, or you can recommend resources. As always, 988 is available for all mental health and suicide crises. 988 is the new national suicide and crisis lifeline. If it is an immediate emergency, please call 911. But if you would like to speak to someone about a crisis, you can call 988 and speak to a trained crisis specialist. For more information, you can reach out to your local Extension office for resources.
