On Election Day in 2013, Kelli Jo Fowler took her 7-year old step-daughter with her to cast a ballot and to teach her the importance of democracy. After the election — when state agents came to her door — she was informed that she was ineligible to vote because of a change to Iowa law that didn’t allow her to vote because of a past nonviolent drug conviction. She was then charged as part of the state's voter fraud investigation championed by Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz. At trial, it took just 40 minutes for the jury to acquit her.
The ACLU filed a lawsuit seeking the restoration of Kelli Jo's voting rights and an end to Iowa voting laws that continue to punish all people with a past felony conviction no matter what their crime.
