The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said the huge number of security forces deployed for the APEC Leaders' Meeting is necessary and not an overkill.

PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said the preparation is intended to ensure the safety and security of delegates while holding the summit in the country.

As many as 30,000 security personnel were deployed to guard the APEC venues.

The police earlier clashed with the protesters who tried to storm the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), the venue of the leaders' meeting.

At least one police officer was reported hurt as the security forces kept the demonstrators at bay.

Mayor warned those who started the skirmish of possible charges and appealed to the protesters to cease from doing violent acts.
