So I went out today on a tip that there were some great crested grebe nesting close by only a 25-minute drive from my home so I took the opportunity to nip out this morning and see if I could find the grebe.
The details that Frank had given me were correct and I found the Great Crested Grebe sitting on the nest with four eggs which was absolutely fantastic to see, the nest is sufficiently hidden and out of the wind and rain a nice sheltered spot to raise their young.
Hopefully, within the next few weeks, eggs will hatch which will be fantastic to go, and video and photographs I will definitely be going back here to give you an update on the chicks and how everybody is doing.
The incubation. Is roughly 25 to 31 days so I would imagine that towards the end of this month, we will have the chicks, the Great Crested Grebe is quite monotonous and they only form pairs usually for one breeding season, and have an elegant mating display which unfortunately I missed out on this time but hopefully next year I will spend a little bit more time with them.
One thing to note is that the chicks practically from hatching are able to swim and dive from the nest, and the parents often carry the young chicks on their back teaching them the skills they will need to catch fish.
