Often our kids have access to so many devices and maintaining their digital wellbeing is just part of the battle. This video shows you some nifty features in Google’s Family Link App that helps to put you back in control.
To get started, you need to download the Family Link App on both devices, yours and your child’s. Google will then prompt you to create a username and password for your child device, which is also used as their own email address.
First handy feature is the reports on screen time and activity. These help you see exactly how long they are spending on their favourite apps, allowing you to make decisions about what they can or can’t do.
You’ll also receive notifications when your child goes to download a new app, giving you the option to approve or deny the request. This also helps you manage in-app purchases, as well as hiding apps you don’t think, are appropriate. If you need help with choosing apps for your kids, then Google offer teacher-recommended ones that you can add directly to their device.
Setting limits is simple too. Just set the timer for each app or for the total device, meaning when it’s finished the device switches itself off. You can also set blackouts periods when the device cannot be used, like bedtime or during an activity where our devices can become a distraction, like dinner time. If all else fails you can put an immediate lock by pressing a button or even simpler, saying ok google, lock [Child’s Name] device.
Last up, our favourite feature. There’s a point where as a parent you pluck up the courage to let your kids be more independent like walking home from school. The Family Link App can provide you real time location data when your child is on the go, as long as they are carrying the device and have a data connection.
Thanks for watching, we will see you next time.
