"FANNY CROSBY (1820 - 1915) was born in New York. She became blind at six weeks of age. She entered the Institution for the Blind in New York, and remained there as a pupil and teacher for 20 years. She was saved at a revival meeting in 1850. She was close friends with President Grover Cleveland who was also secretary for the Institute of the Blind. At 38, Fanny married Van Alstyne, who was also blind. Now, since she had always loved poetry, she began to write hymns. Her hymns and poems total over 8,000. Among them are "Blessed Assurance" and "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour.' "
