STORYLINE:
The first United Nations mission to visit the region in three decades arrived in the former breakaway state of Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday to assess the situation.
The team is led by Vladanka Andreeva from North Macedonia, who is the U.N.'s Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan.
Local officials dismissed the visit as a formality.
A spokesperson for Nagorno-Karabakh’s emergency services said the U.N. team had come too late and that the number of civilians left in the regional capital of Stepanakert could be “counted on one hand.”
While Azerbaijan has pledged to respect the rights of ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, many have fled due to fear of reprisals or losing the freedom to use their language and to practice their religion and customs.
