The Global Stocktake or GST is a crucial part of the Paris Agreement, is an ongoing assessment of progress in mitigating global warming since the agreement's inception in 2015. It's a moment to scrutinize the state of our planet, like taking inventory, and chart a better course for the future. The results of the first-ever global stocktake will be deliberated at COP28, November 2023 in the UAE. The next stocktake is scheduled for 2028.
The primary objective is to coordinate global efforts on climate action, aiming to bridge gaps in progress. Preliminary findings indicate that the global community is falling short of the Paris goals. The overarching target is to limit global warming to under 2°C, with efforts to stay within the more ambitious 1.5°C threshold.
