I will cover the following areas:
Traditional Use in Medicine: Milk thistle has a long history of use in various traditional medicinal practices. It has been valued for its potential benefits in liver-related conditions such as cirrhosis, jaundice, hepatitis, and gallbladder disorders.
Modern Lab Research: Scientific studies have investigated the active component of milk thistle, known as silymarin. These studies have shown that silymarin possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Current Cancer Research: Recent laboratory studies have explored the potential anti-cancer effects of milk thistle, particularly its active substances like silymarin. Early findings suggest that milk thistle might have the ability to inhibit cancer cell division and reduce blood supply to tumors.
Clinical Study on Liver Protection: A specific clinical study was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of silymarin in non-cirrhotic patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Unfortunately, this study failed to demonstrate the benefits of milk thistle in protecting the liver among this particular group of patients.
Side Effects: While milk thistle is generally considered safe, it can cause mild side effects such as stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
Preparation of Decoction: I will also provide instructions on how to prepare a milk thistle decoction at home.
