Monoterpenes is the largest chemical family of essential oils. The constituents from this family are found everywhere in nature - made up of hydrogen and carbon molecules called hydrocarbons and contain 10 carbon atoms. Monoterpenes are a small molecular structure that makes them very light.
Top notes are rich in monoterpenes. Their fragrance dissipates quickly. If you use these in a diffuser, they disappear almost immediately. An example of a monoterpene is d-limonene found in most citrus oils. This constituent gives these oils their lemony, fresh scent.
