There are challenges that come along with being a female physician. Dr. Neha Janakiraman says, as in other careers, women are paid less than their male counterparts are. Often patients have assumed that she is the nurse, expecting to see a male physician.
Transcript:
Women in medicine, we have challenges as well that come with it. Just like any other career, I think the data came out where women physicians were paid substantially lesser than male counterparts.
Sometimes patients assume that a male is the physician, and a female would be your nurse. I would go in, I would compassionately talk, shake their hand, talk to them at length. Sometimes the patients would understand, but sometimes the family members would still wait for a male physician to come back in. The nurse would be like, “No, that is your doctor. She is the one who calls the shots here.” And they would be like, “Oh yeah, we get it.”
