The United States has criticizes the handling of Uganda's presidential elections. This is after concerns were raised following the house arrest of opposition leader Kizza Besigye and the shutting down of social media sites. In a statement the U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner called for the immediate release of Besigye and the restoration of access to social media sites.
