8 Most Important IT Consultant Skills
0:24
1. The English language
This is perhaps irrelevant for native English speakers, but for everyone else, if you’re in IT, and you don’t feel confident in written or spoken English, I suggest you start putting in hours right away because there is no other skill that is as 100% sure that it’s going to give you a dividend on your investment.

2. Communicate on the right technical level
This is closely tied to point number one, so if you already know how to speak in English, now it’s important to keep your communication on a level that is interpretable by the person that you’re speaking to.
So if you’re a developer, for example, identify who you’re speaking to and adjust your language accordingly. Don’t squeeze in buzzwords and acronyms if you don’t think that the recipient of your message knows exactly what they mean.

3. Be a problem solver, not a problem creator
No matter who you’re communicating to, whether it’s directly with the client, or with a project manager, when you leave a meeting your aim should always be that when you meet again, you’ve solved a problem or moved forward toward a common goal.

4. Be technically skilled and up to date
This is something that goes without saying of course. Be skilled in whatever it is that you do, whether it’s DevOps, API development, Databases, UX UI, etc. Always stay on top of the skill, read cutting-edge blogs, try new technologies, follow the development of frameworks. Don’t let time make your skillset outdated.

5. Be a good listener
Only speak as much as you need to speak. When speaking to your client, let them draw up a vision of what they believe is the end goal, then ask the right questions to verify that they understand their own needs properly.

6. Be organized
Whether you’re working in a SCRUM or KANBAN methodology, stick to your process, update your tickets as you’re going through the process. Document your code, update your teammates on changes that are important for them to know. Write your hours at the end of every day to make sure they aren’t lost. Etc etc.

7. Be dependable
When you work with people for some time, you know which people you can be 100% sure that they will deliver on what’s asked of them. These are also the people that climb the fastest in their careers because what founders and managers love, are people that take full responsibility for the task at hand, and often deliver above expectations.

8. Be a team player
If you’re working in a company with any kind of healthy company culture, being a team player should do you good. Think team first!
Also, know that the best teams are not frictionless, you need to have opposing ideas to be able to evolve, just remember that in every debate THE BEST IDEA HAS TO WIN EVERY TIME! Not your ego! THE BEST IDEA HAS TO WIN EVERY TIME!
