"Our candlelit march over here is to give tribute to those Tibetan martyrs, brothers and sisters, who have died recently. And also from 1959 and 2009 thousands of Tibetans have died. Very recently the international community has seen that Tibetans have been treated brutally. Tortures and inhuman treatment have been happening inside Tibet. In order to give solidarity and to give tribute to Tibetan people inside Tibet, we five NGOs (Non Government Organisations) have organised this candle light vigil today."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Tibetans living in exile in India held a candle lit procession in the town of Dharmsala on Saturday to protest Chinese rule over their homeland.
Saturday's vigil marked the anniversary of the date Beijing crushed a 1959 Tibetan uprising, sending the Dalai Lama over the Himalayas into exile and placing Tibet under its direct rule for the first time.
The protesters carried candles, Tibetan flags and pictures of the Dalai Lama as they walked though the streets chanting prayers before assembling at the Tsuglakhang temple in Dharmsala, the headquarters in northern India of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
They also observed a minute's silence in memory of Tibetans who have lost their lives in anti-China protests since March 2008.
One of the organisers, Dawa Tsering, said the vigil was organised to show "solidarity and to give tribute to Tibetan people inside Tibet".
Later, a group of Tibetans organised a screening of a video allegedly smuggled out of Tibet which apparently shows violence against Tibetans in the aftermath of the March 2008 protests.
The Dalai Lama recently compared life under Chinese rule in Tibet to "hell on earth." Beijing angrily dismissed his remarks.
Last year, peaceful protests marking the 1959 uprising spiralled out of control, resulting in rioting in Lhasa on March 14 and widespread demonstrations elsewhere in Tibet and three surrounding provinces.
