The plot of the story revolves around the image of a small beggar boy (six years old or younger) who is enchanted by the sight of a New Year's tree outside the window of a rich house, where there is plenty of light, many toys, an abundance of delicious food, and many beautifully dressed, clean children dancing and having fun to the sounds of music. Meanwhile, he is forced to freeze on the crowded streets of St. Petersburg, hungry and abandoned by his unfortunate parents, having long gone without a full meal and seen nothing but drunkenness, poverty, rudeness, debauchery, and indifference in the Petersburg slums. For a moment, the boy's dreams of a happy childhood come true. He has arrived at the Christ's Christmas Tree.
