☑️Project Description
MIL Design & Construction was approached by one of the global leader in infrastructure and property development to design the Gamuda Learning Academy, a centre envisioned as a training cum learning hub where employees and members of the local community could undertake training to advance their professional skills and further their knowledge. The centre also houses The Enabling Academy which is a unique learning platform open to the public where young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can go to receive guided training and support to prepare to help them enter the workforce. The centre would feature an atmosphere of innovation and creativity in which to inspire and promote learning.
The design brief called for a total transformation of 32,000sqf which is made up of 5 adjacent units of 35-year-old shop lots in located at a residential pocket of Kuala Lumpur.
The site had been unoccupied for a few years and the first challenge came from analyzing the feasibility site in terms of program, concept, budget and space layout. There were numerous site restrictions like structural issues, low ceilings, poor acoustic reverberation levels and a lack of natural sunlight and windows.
Common areas are designed as open areas, and training rooms are maximized with glass for more natural lightings.
The Enabling Academy floor has an open-concept mock up office and private meeting rooms. Every corner is filled with interactive, doodling walls for sketching and scribbling. There is less windows at this level to avoid an overload of light levels. Extensive research into the visual and spatial needs often held by people with ASD was reflected in the design.
Through means of modern design elements and an emphasis on interactive and collaborative lifestyle spaces, Mil Design transformed the space into a vibrant hotspot for learning and development.
In developing the concept, we were inspired by vibrant pops of colors and an interplay of bold graphics amidst an urban industrial palette of black metals and raw concrete. 3 key words drive the concept, which are Interaction, Collaboration and Flexibility
The idea is to portray an element of surprise, exploration and to provoke interaction among the students. Through a combination of different lighting selections, an exposed ceiling, urban and mobile furniture types, and an extensive variety of materials like artificial turf, vinyl flooring laid in bold patterns; the design creates a dynamic and inviting space that is ideal for creative learning.
Façade Wall
The 40-foot-long façade wall is one of The Learning Academy’s most distinctive features.
Designed to light up at night with an abstracted motif of birds in flight, the wall is inspired by The Goose Theory – a leadership philosophy which is presented the V-shape which birds assume during flight. Similarly, this theory inspires the floor and wall pattern motifs that are seen throughout the design.
