Thousands of protesters descended on the streets of Assam on Wednesday, clashing with police and plunging the state into chaos. Anti-Citizenship Bill dissenters fought pitched battles with security forces in several districts of the state. Police fired tear gas shells and baton-charged protesters, who fought back. According to student leaders many agitators were injured in police action in front of the secretariat in capital Dispur. Reports said hundreds of protesters were detained in Guwahati and other places. Protesters also damaged a stage erected on the road for PM Narendra Modi's proposed summit with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Sunday. Spontaneous protests were witnessed in Jorhat, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur and many other districts. At least 14 trains have been cancelled.
