Yalda is an Iranian festival that marks the longest night of the year and the beginning of winter. This event falls on December 21st the first day of the 10th month in the Iranian calendar.

ancient Persians believed that on this night the Sun was saved from the claws of darkness and gradually spread its rays all over the world to symbolize the triumph of good over evil today
this tradition has turned into a social event where families keep the fires burning and the lights glowing to symbolically help the Sun in its battle against darkness Nuts are served on Yalda night to ward off evil.

On Yalda night, guests are entertained with a variety of fresh fruits available and of
course the watermelon. Yes, the Watermelon is a must on the other night. It's a tradition in Iran to meet up in the house of the eldest family member. The Yalda celebration is an opportunity for Iranians to gather around and enjoy each other's company. What Iranian also like to do is to munch on nuts who got a whole variety; there are pistachios raisins hazelnuts where we have got some walnuts, some sweets, dry fruits; yes everything in one place for us to enjoy
