Widesight interviewed the Department for International Trade, Siemens Gamesa and Innogy at Global Offshore Wind 2019.
Fulsome Government commitment and a healthy project pipeline has taken offshore wind from the margins to a fully mainstream energy source and industry.
By unifying as a single driving force to solve
problems and negotiate with Government,
the sector has demonstrated the leading role that offshore wind can play in the energy
transition.
There is now growing optimism about the UK’s pathway to subsidy-free offshore wind, despite a degree of ambiguity around how that is
defined in different regimes (for example, in Germany, financial liability for grid connections does not sit with the developer as it does in the UK, which makes like-for-like comparisons problematic).
However, the policy regime must keep pace and adapt to the changing technological and
commercial dynamics of the market, and whilst the 6GW cap remains in place there are
concerns that this may limit the pace of growth.
