When I was working on my Youtube project on climbing the rating ladder, I noticed chess players only truly understand when to open or close the pawn storm positions when they reach 1200 ELO on chess.com. Around that level, they start to understand that the pawns should be used to open lines against the enemy king, when the kings have castled on opposite flanks and thus the position is calling for attack and timely dynamism.
Surprisingly, I discovered the same conclusion was also formed by a neural network Maia chess, which was trained on millions of human games on different rating levels. Maia chess aims to predict human moves and human mistakes per rating levels, to be able to become a human-like training partner. In their website, Maia chess also predicts that people start playing correctly in those pawn storm positions only when they reach 1500 ELO on lichess, which is around 1200 ELO chess.com.
This information has important ramifications both from a developmental point of view but for how we should tailor our coaching for particular students on different rating levels, so that they can reach their next skill milestone.
