National Chambal Sanctuary is 5400 Sq. Km. protected area located on the Chambal River near the tripoint of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh. Within the sanctuary, the pristine Chambal River cuts through mazes of ravines & hills. It is home to more than 500 species of mammals, birds, fish & reptiles.
Bonelli's Eagle is a resident bird. It is a powerful, bold and active hunter of mammals and birds larger than itself in size.
Sightings of Sloth Bear have increased palpably over the past few years. Since the area is rich in forage, with abundance of termite mounds, jujube bushes on the plateau & honey combs are plentiful in the valley the thriving Sloth Bear population is hardly surprising.
Rhesus Macaque is commonly sighted here. It is possibly the most diverse habitat user of all monkeys in India.
Chambal River valley has emerged as the world’s biggest breeding colony of Long Billed Vultures. More than 140 nests of these vultures are found along over 100 km long stretch of Chambal River from Kota to Gandhi Sagar dam in Madhya Pradesh. These birds start breeding from the month of October. They mainly breed on cliffs & gorges of the valley. Round the year water availability in perennial Chambal River, food availability due to livestock presence and safe habitat are major reasons behind the thriving population of these vultures. Long Billed Vultures are considered as the most efficient scavenging bird among all vulture species.
Leopard sightings are frequent in this area and chances of spotting one basking in the winter sun are quite high as we found out with sighting of this gorgeous mammal.
One of the hidden surprises of this boat safari turned out to be this small but beautiful waterfall even after the monsoon had ended. One can imagine water flow levels during peak monsoon. Watching the water gushing down from the hill from the comfort of a speed boat is a different experience altogether.
Peregrine Falcon is a winter visitor throughout the Indian subcontinent. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h during its characteristic hunting stoop (high-speed dive), making it the fastest bird in the world, as well as the fastest member of the animal kingdom.
