So many healers in RBGs seem to think that as long as they hit their healing and dispel numbers in details or recount then they're doing their job and any loss can be blamed elsewhere. In truth, if you're numbers are looking that good then you probably aren't doing half bad. You've had to stick with the fighting, not consistenly go oom, push the right buttons, and most importantly... not die. That said, there's always room for improvment.
Today I'm going to talk about single target dispelling. We'll talk a bit about prioritizing your dispells and finally I'll walk you through how I personally set up my addons to support priority dispelling.
Right about now I can imagine a lot of healers that are new to RBGs are likely having a knee-jerk reaction already to this video. Often I've encountered healers that are afraid of dispelling because of dot protection. The reality of dot protection is that it's not an excuse to just not dispel ever. What it is meant to be is a cost you pay for dispelling. Because of that cost, you need to ask yourself is this dispel worth it? For your mass dispels and revivals, it's pretty obvious that you should try and maximize the dots you're removing when you pop those. For single target dispels it can be a little tricky. If a lock is stacking multiple UAs on a target you're obviously going to want to rip of the first half of those stacks early or your heals are going to be out damaged. If you're just paying the price of removing vampiric touch from a shadow priest, then you need to ask yourself "is this dot worth it?"
Reality is, debuffs are not all created equally. There are some you can just heal through. There are others that don't cause any damage at all but they might be preventing your team from getting kills or capping flags. A good healer will not only put up good healing and dispel numbers but they'll also help their team to secure objectives.
Here is a starter list of just four debuffs that I will, more often than not, individually pay the price of dispelling dot protection for:
This list is as of Legion 7.3.5. If you think a particular debuff should be added to it, please feel free to share in the comments.
Hammer of Justice (Pally)
This is a 4 sec stun that that can be removed by healers that dispel magic effects. Paladin have to get close to a target to cast this on them and generally they open with it right before bursting. If you can get a target out of a 4 second stun then it allows them to pop a defensive cooldown and run rather than making you pop a major healing cooldown to keep them up.
Silence(Spriest)
This is a 5 second silence on a 45 second cooldown. This is another that can be removed by healers that dispel magic effects.
Generally this one either goes on a caster DPS right in the middle of their burst or on a fellow healer that's probably in a better position to burst heal the enemy teams burst target. Either way, more often than not, if you can pay the cost of a 3 second fear to get them our of a 5 second silence along with dispelling a few additional things then it's worth your effort.
Eye of Leotheras (DH)
This is an honor talent that a DH might take. They put it on casters and if it's ignored during an intense team fight, a caster can suddening cast themselves to death. It lasts 6 seconds but if that caster is popping insta-casts they will very quickly drop in health. The good news is that this is on a 45 second cooldown.
Mind Bomb (Spriest)
Mind Bomb is a talent that sneaky Spriests love to take because it's ranged and yet causes a 4 second aoe stun. If it manages to go off on your front line of melee during a burst moment you're going to have a ton of really pissed dps'ers. It's on a 30 second cooldown and will often be lined up with a burst of damage on someone so it's worth getting rid of.
This is just a starter list. It's intended to make a point that there are debuffs worth single target dispelling despite dot protection. Each time Blizz puts out new changes, your top healers will be looking for changes to debuffs in order to update their own dispel priorities.
As a side note, just because you've made your list of priority dispels doesn't mean you can't maximize dispels during a lul in a fight. If you can rid your team of additional slows, stuns, and CCs rather than just healing through then it'll help your team to clear up a fight quicker.
