I have just spend the past week in glorious Brighton to continue my 'Advanced Clinical Massage Therapy' journey with Jing Massage. 'Jing' are the only educators in the UK to offer BTEC level 6, the highest of the highest massage qualification!
I started my journey with them in 2019 when I completed my scar tissue training. I was bowled over with not only how knowledgeable they are but in how they share this knowledge. They teach from the heart. They are vibrant and compassionate. You dance, hold hands (now gloved 🧤!) and meditate, this filled my yoga loving heart and body with joy!
In 'lockdown' they dynamically grasped the bull by its horns and opened their clinical massage certification online! So every 3 weeks we 'Zoomed' together, learning anatomy and pathologies and massaged together virtually. This training filled my time, when I wasn't dancing with my daughter and Oti Mabuse or cooking, then I was studying and practicing amazing soft-tissue techniques on my family!
Our online learning will be consolidated over 12 LIVE days across this autumn . Last week I enjoyed honing my skills on relieving tension in the neck, shoulders, arms and hands OR crook neck, shoulder impingement and carpel tunnel syndrome, plus many other presenting issues in the upper body. LOVED IT!
So what makes clinical massage different from a sports or deep tissue massage? Firstly, it is clinical...you will receive a full consultation in which your range of motion is assessed, this then highlights movements that are restricted and narrows down the muscles that likely to be causing your pain and movement limitations. Then on to the good bit...hands on! All of the muscles around the affected joint(s) will be touched, but your assessment flagged the key muscles that need more attention, so these will get more attention! We follow the HFMAST method:
H = hot or cold. Heat (hot stones) is used to warm and sooth muscles and cold might be used to reduce pain.
F = fascial techniques. These techniques use gentle compression or rolling, heat and time so that the soft tissue yields letting you sink through the skin to reach the deeper fascial layers of the body.
M = massage! A combination of strokes and soft tissue techniques such as soft tissue release, trigger point compression and friction to remove tissue adhesions (stuck bits!) in the body.
A = acupressure points blending eastern techniques with the research based clinical ones.
S = stretches. What we all naturally do when our bodies feel tight...streeetch!
T = teach. Self-care in the form of tailored exercise to stretch and strengthen the body or breathing techniques and meditation to reduce stress. Self-care is offered so that you can feel empowered and become actively involved in creating a body that moves with ease, and a mind that promotes happiness and joy in your life!
