Laurence Carroll was born in Dublin in 1856. Like many Irish people, he left Ireland in search of work and went to the USA. He worked his way around the country until he found work on a trans-Pacific liner that was travelling back and forth to Japan. He was kicked off the ship in Japan for his bad behaviour and from there made his way to Burma (now called Myanmar).
Carroll became a novice Buddhist monk in the 1880s and took the name U Dhammaloka. By 1900 he was a senior monk in a monastery and became famous by travelling around and preaching about the dangers of Christian missionaries. He said that they threatened not only Buddhism but the nation and culture of Burma. He said that these Christian missionaries came with “a bottle of brandy, a Holy Bible and a Gatling gun”
In this week’s episode, not only do we talk about the amazing story of U Dhammaloka but we also speak to our friend Jamie who spent most of last year in a monastery as a Buddhist monk. We learn about Buddhism, as well as the daily life of a monk, and the reasons why someone would become a monk.
