We started our journey from Maheshwar early as we wanted to cover 2 places today i.e., Raverkhedi and Omkareshwar. Our first leg was going to be Raverkhedi, which was located at a distance of 45 kms from Maheshwar City. Raverkhedi, a village in Madhya Pradesh is known for the Samadhi Sthal/ Death Place/ Cenotaph of Peshwa Bajirao I/ Thorle Bajirao, one of the greatest warriors in Indian history. He was a noted Indian general who never lost a battle in his military career spanning 20 years. According to the British Army officer Bernard Montgomery, Bajirao was possibly the finest cavalry general ever produced by India. Bajirao died on 28 April 1740, at the age of 39 of a sudden fever, possibly heat stroke, while inspecting his jahgirs. At that time, he was en route to Delhi with nearly 100,000 troops under his command at his camp in the Khargone district, near the city of Indore. He was cremated on the same day at Raverkhedi on Narmada River. His loyal lieutenant, Scindia (of Gwalior) got his Samadhi (chhatri) built at Raverkhedi. The memorial is enclosed by a dharmashala. The compound has two temples, dedicated to Nilkantheshwara Mahadeva(Shiva) and Rameshvara.
Later we proceeded to Omkareshwar, which was located at a distance of 42 kms away. Omkareshwar is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu ॐ (Om) symbol. It is situated in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh state in India. Built in the Nagara style, the Omkareshwar temple is featured by an eminent Shikhara. There are two main temples of Lord Shiva here, one to Omkareshwar (whose name means "Lord of Omkara or the Lord of the Om sound") located in the island and one to Mamleshwar (whose name means "Immortal Lord" or "lord of the Immortals or Devas") located on the south bank of Narmada River on the mainland. Omkareshwar is said to be the place where Sri Adi Shankara met his Guru Govindapada in a cave. This cave can be found even today just below the Shiva temple where an image of Adi Shankara has been installed. In the evening once done with the darshan we decided to take a ride in the boat and spend some quality time at the ghats observing the devotees lighting the diyas and let it float on the water.
