Foresight is the most crucial leadership skill set in today's environment. I believe today's most underrated and essential leadership skill is the ability to effectively manage, harness, and leverage the constant change around us. This can be done through foresight.
Foresight is a way to examine the paths the future might take. This is where leaders need to read signals, see trends, and always test their own assumptions. Just like anything else in the leader toolbox, it's a skill that anyone who has to make long-range decisions should pay attention to and educate themselves on how to critically think with foresight and acquire it.
Leading in today's environment means being adaptive and transformative. Foresight moves from a position of reactive "disruption" to proactive transformation. A leader with foresight shows us where our organization is headed and how we can successfully arrive.
Here are three ways you can start to learn the skill of foresight:
1. Question your assumptions and biases.
2. Continue to learn new things you are not an expert in (grow).
3. Be provocative, dream big, use your imagination and constantly challenge yourself.
If people think your ideas are "too far out there," it probably means you are on the right track!
