The Angel Oak is estimated to be more than 500 years old. It’s located in a wooded area on John’s Island just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The tree currently has a circumference of 25 feet, a diameter spread of 160 feet and covers about 17,100 square feet of ground. Its longest branch is 187 feet.
The Angel Oak is known as the most impressive work of nature in South Carolina and is thought to be one of the oldest trees east of Mississippi River. Over the centuries, the Angel Oak has survived rough weather including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods as well as human interference.
The Angel Oak has been considered a sacred place for many years. Legend states that Native Americans met under its shady branches before the area was settled by the colonists. Many believe the Native American spirits can still be felt around the tree as they work to protect it. Civil Rights Activists like Septima Clark, along with African American families, would gather under the tree to find solace during times of segregation. Local folklore tells stories of the ghosts of slaves appearing as angels above the tree.
If your travels bring you to coastal South Carolina, I highly recommend visiting this magnificent tree.
