Wir befinden uns im Niemandsland – ein heruntergekommener Bereich zwischen der Stadt und dem Hafenviertel mit dem alten Kohlekraftwerk. Es ist ein postapokalyptisches Ödland das sich hier vor uns ausbreitet, bedrückend, deprimierend, doch gleichzeitig auch irgendwie wunderschön!

Das alte Kohlekraftwerk – wieder einer dieser Orte, den kein Tagestourist zu sehen bekommt. Der Kohleabbau begann hier im großen Stil erst Mitte der 1950er. In den nächsten 40 Jahren sollten hier 9 Millionen Tonnen des schwarzen Goldes aus der Mine geborgen werden, von denen eine Million direkt wieder im Kraftwerk verbrannt wurde, um die Siedlung mit Wärme und Energie zu versorgen. Es ist eine riskante Mission auf die wir uns begeben, denn das marode Gebäude ist mit Giftstoffen verseucht und manche Bereiche akut einsturzgefährdet. Doch unser Einsatz lohnt sich, denn neben der Schaltzentrale machen wir auch einige außergewöhnliche Entdeckungen: was hat eine Sauna in einem Kohlekraftwerk zu suchen?

Die riesigen funktionsfähigen Turbinen wurden nach dem AUS für Pyramiden nicht einfach zurückgelassen, sondern ausgebaut und nach Barentsburg verschifft, wo sie auch heute noch im aktiven Kohlekraftwerk ihren Dienst verrichten – Wertarbeit made in USSR!!!

We are in no man's land - a run-down area between the city and the harbor district with the old coal-fired power plant. It is a post-apocalyptic wasteland that spreads out before us, oppressive, depressing, but at the same time somehow beautiful!

The old coal-fired power station – another one of those places that no day-tripper gets to see. Large-scale coal mining here only began in the mid-1950s. Over the next 40 years, 9 million tons of black gold were to be recovered from the mine, one million of which was burned directly in the power plant to supply the settlement with heat and energy. It is a risky mission that we are embarking on because the dilapidated building is contaminated with toxins and some areas are in acute danger of collapsing. But our effort is worth it, because in addition to the control center, we also make some extraordinary discoveries: what is a sauna doing in a coal-fired power plant?

The huge, functional turbines were not simply left behind after the pyramids were shut down, but were removed and shipped to Barentsburg, where they are still in service today in the active coal-fired power plant - quality workmanship made in the USSR!!!
