The heat of summer means tomato season is coming! Nothing beats a ripe tomato, fresh from the garden with the warmth of the sun still on the flesh.

I grow indeterminate tomatoes which means they grow large and can take over an area. To keep them in check and sturdy, I always place cages on them while they're small. The cages help support the plants while they grow. If needed, I secure branches to the cage with garden Velcro or nylon hosiery. You want something nonabrasive that will not hurt the plants.
Indeterminate tomatoes grow “suckers” at every leaf “Y." These suckers eventually become large and suck the energy out of the main stem. If left to grow, they become heavy and can crowd out or shade the tomatoes as they try to ripen.
For healthier plants, I remove the suckers to create a stronger central leader while opening up the plant for better air circulation and light!
