Why do digital transformation initiatives fail? That’s probably a million-dollar question that everyone would like to have an answer to. While there is not just one reason that can be attributed to the digital transformation failure, it’s the combination of factors that play along to make a digital transformation successful. In general, it is going to be the careful planning and appreciation of the process that is perhaps the most critical to making the digital transformation successful.
Also, while there have been several attempts in improvising the methodology to improve the outcome of digital transformation engagements, it’s not just the methodology that can improve these projects. In most cases, it is going to be the experience in executing these engagements. The more experience you get under your belt, the more conservative you are going to be with your approach.
Finally, as the architecture becomes more complex because of the increased system landscape with the growing number of channels and because of the advancements of industry4.0 technologies, the failure rate of digital transformation engagements is only going to increase. And for this reason, you can never underestimate the power of the pre-selection phase as well as of the enterprise architecture. Irrespective of whether you are using one system with several add-ons or have a very complex architecture, having a clear master data interaction model and defining enterprise architecture is crucial for the success of your digital transformation.
So if you have been contemplating a large transformation project and trying to figure out how you can avoid failure at your organization, start with your existing processes and architecture. Identify each and every component of your architecture and figure out how it interacts with your current systems and processes. Once you have that down, involve your business users and draw the to-be state. But these process models need to be in a vendor- and solution-agnostic fashion. Once you have this, then try to figure out the technologies that might make sense in the new architecture. If you follow the process of SDLC even with ERP implementation, you might not get as many surprises as you would if you underestimated the effort involved with ERP and digital transformation implementation.
So how have these factors changed? And where do other companies miss with their digital transformation execution? And how to build consensus across teams so everyone is aligned with the vision?
We have interviewed over 200 executives to compile this list, along with the data points from our internal engagements.
