The everyday suffering of stray dogs in Romania is immense: they suffer from a lack of food, water, untreated illness, injuries and sometimes deliberate abuse. Puppies are born under horrible conditions, and many of these babies do not survive their first weeks of life.
Also Constanta, the largest port city of Romania, struggles with a large population of stray dogs. Stray dogs are mostly seen as a threat and the situation is extremely severe.
In the past, the stray dogs faced only two possible scenarios in Constanta: Either they were caught and brought to a killing shelter, or they ended up in a regular shelter where they were waiting in their small kennels with thousands of other dogs, with limited chances to be ever adopted.
In September 2020, a radical shift in the government’s attitude happened towards stray dogs and the newly elected mayor of Constanta asked FOUR PAWS and our local partner Animal Society for help to implement, together with the community, a humane dog population management programme.
We fight every day for a better life for these street dogs. We neuter them to reduce the population and vaccinate them to prevent them from deadly diseases, such as rabies.
We also work together with the local community which is essential in our projects: we address community attitudes and behaviours towards strays and Responsible Pet Ownership, as irresponsible ownership is one of the root causes of the stray animal problem.
We hope that one day, no dog has to fight for its life on the street anymore. You can read more here: [ Ссылка ]
