During a recent Dharma Talk for Buddhist Church of Oakland, I talked about Vesak - the Theravada observance of Shakyamuni Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana. In Jodo Shinshu, we observe Shakyamuni's birth in April (Hanamatsuri), his enlightenment in December (Bodhi Day), and his passing into Nirvana in February (Nirvana Day), and May is when we celebrate Shinran Shonin's birthday (Gotan-e) - what's going on?!!
