Why did I choose this song?
After my dad shared and reminded me of the heart wrenching account surrounding the writing of the lyrics of "It Is Well" I was inspired to record this hymn.
As a mother of four, I can only imagine what Horatio Spafford and his wife Anna were feeling during their times of tragedy of losing children and other stuggles they went through.
Horatio G. Spafford was successful lawyer and businessman in Chicago and married to Anna with five children.
In 1871 after, Horatio and Anna had been married for 10 years, their young son died of pneumonia. Also that year, the Great Fire of Chicago destroyed most of their real estate investments.
Two years later they decided to go to England for a family vacation. Anna and their four daughters traveled ahead of Horatio. The steamship Ville du Havre they were traveling on was struck by an iron sailing vessel and caused all four of their daughters their lives. When Anna arrived in England she sent here husband a telegram saying "Saved alone. What shall I do..."
My heart hurts thinking of the pain that not only Horatio must of felt learning this news but also Anna as she was waiting for her husband to join her.
Horatio was inspired to write these words while traveling to meet his wife in England.
As I sing this song I am reminded that no matter what happens in our life that God is truly faithful.
Although circumstances may arise in our physical world, all is well with my soul.

Note of after the tragedy at sea:
Horatio and Anna had eight children in total. Three more were born after the tragedy at sea.
They lost the four daughters at sea and two different sons passed away when they were four years old.
Horatio, Anna and their two daughters Grace and Bertha traveled to Jerusalem in 1881.
There they had many opportunities to service humanity including caring for wounded from World War I from both sides of the conflict.
After losing their four daughters, Anna Spafford was wondering why she was spared she remembered hearing a voice saying “you were saved for a purpose.”
