From Our Archive - In this video, our cameras spent a day inside a maximum-security juvenile prison as incarcerated kids were interviewing to be accepted into the "best" cell block in the prison: the Military cell block. As our cameras sat with three military veterans who worked full time at the prison running the Future Soldiers cell block, they told us about what it takes to be accepted into the unit, what's expected of the kids who appy, and ultimately, what can get them kicked out of the program if they screw up even once.
During the weeks we were inside the prison, the military program received 150 applications from incarcerated kids for only 3 available spots. In this video, we sat in on an interview with a 16-year old boy who had been kicked out of the program in the past. He explained to the officers that he had had a change of heart, and that he wanted back in the unit to help him stay on the right track. He said he was fighting and experiencing nothing but negativity in his current cell block, and he thought the kids in the military unit would help him with his anger control issues. The officers asked him some tough questions during the interview. They hoped their stern words would make him understand the importance of this last chance opportunity.
Update: The boy was accepted into the unit and completed the program successfully. He eventually moved into a placement facility upon release from prison.
