BUDVA, MONTENEGRO: Let me take you inside the fortified old town of Budva called Stari Grad - a historic living quarter with mediaeval walls, tiny streets & renowned buildings.

I spent a few hours in the old town of Budva and very much enjoyed wandering through the narrow streets and admiring the old mediaeval stone buildings on my way.

Budva Old Town (Stari Grad) is situated on a peninsula almost entirely surrounded by sea and mountains keeping the place secure during mediaeval times. The fortified city walls were originally erected in the 9th century but rebuilt by the Venetians following a devastating earthquake in the 17th century. The history in the Balkans is incredible and the story of Budva is no exception.

The highlight was visiting the citadel and enjoying the sweeping panoramic view across the red roofs and church spires of mediaeval buildings frozen in time, all of them seemingly close enough to touch. For a few extra Euros it is also possible to gain entry to the walkway on top of the fortifications and get a first-hand look at what the defenders of the city would have seen centuries ago. If you look in the other direction you can catch a glimpse into gardens and quaint passageways frequented by locals.

Budva is often busy with tourists who flock here from all over Montenegro and beyond, many are taking a holiday and enjoying the calm, cool atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to find - many of them offering outdoor dining and live music.

Hidden away between the fortified city walls and the sea is a secluded beach that serves as a cool place to relax and catch some of Montenegro's powerful late afternoon sun. The historical quarter of Budva is amazing and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
