A new species of dinosaur has been discovered on the Isle of Wight, marking the first find of its kind on the island since 1865. The newly discovered dinosaur belongs to the family of ankylosaurs, known for their armored bodies. Despite its fearsome appearance, the dinosaur named Vectipelta barretti was a plant-eater. The fossilized remains were found in rocks dating between 66 and 145 million years old. The species was named after Professor Paul Barrett, a researcher at the Natural History Museum in London. Although it shares some similarities with another ankylosaur found on the island called Polacanthus foxii, scientists believe they are not closely related. The discovery suggests that ankylosaurs could freely move between Asia and Europe during the Early Cretaceous period. The finding sheds light on the diversity of dinosaur species in England during that time and may lead to the reanalysis of other fossil remains previously attributed to P. foxii. The Wessex Formation, where the new species was found, is considered an important resource for understanding dinosaur extinction.
