Charlie, our black and white tuxedo Cat, was an abandoned older kitten when he was caught on the streets, and brought to an SPCA pet shelter for protection and proper care. SPCA = "Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals".

At the SPCA’s pet shelter Charlie was very shy and scared. When Charlie tried to play with the older cats - they hissed at him. To keep himself safe, Charlie would hide and squat in the corner of the play area. From his safe place, Charlie, with his big beautiful eyes, would watch the other cats play.

When we tried to pick Charlie up, he was so scared and wouldn’t let us. But when we did manage to pick Charlie up, we could hear Charlie give an ever-so-faint purr when we gently and affectionately petted his head. But very quickly after, Charlie became fearful and would jump out of our arms.

Charlie was the oldest remaining kitten at SPCA's pet shelter when we adopted him. All the younger kittens who were there a shorter time were already adopted. But how cold we walk away from Charlie- in what was a lonely and frightening place to him. So we adopted him too.

Six weeks earlier we had adopted an orange kitten from that same pet shelter. That orange kitten bonded with our family immediately. When we brought Charlie home, our orange kitten soon became Charlie's helper cat. And soon they became good friends and now do everything together.

Thank you SPCA for rescuing Charlie from the streets, and saving his life too, we're sure. And thank you SPCA volunteers for watching over all the pets, including Charlie when he was there. All of those beautiful pets need your love and kindness, and you so graciously give yourself to their care.
