The trouble with testing a bilge pump is its location. They’re generally in the lowest part of the boat so that they can pick up the largest amount of any water that comes on board.
In this video, John will start out showing you how to test a bilge pump using a multimeter on a three-way switch, and we’ll do it at the physical switch itself. In this setup, the bilge pump float switch test is completely separate from the bilge pump test since they’re two separate units. We can check to make sure the circuits are intact, and that will give us a good idea of the health of both the pump and switch.
In our second setup, we’ll test a completely automatic bilge pump with an internal switch. This pump setup has just a simple on/off switch. Here, we’ll run through the battery, the fuse, and the switch itself. Then, we’ll show you how to use a resistance test to check out the pump itself. John will also show you how this particular pump has a touch point that allows you to test if the pump is working.
In our final test, we’ll submerge the bilge pump to test the switch.
