In Part 3 of the Refrigeration Basics series, Bert and Elliot take the classroom outside to apply what was covered in the previous lessons to actual HVAC equipment. They walk through the refrigerant circuit from the evaporator to the condenser, identifying each component and explaining the conditions of the refrigerant at each point.
Bert provides hands-on demonstrations, having the techs feel the temperature differences before and after the metering device to illustrate the flashing/boiling process. They discuss concepts like flashing gas, pressure drops across metering devices, the effects of restrictions, and the importance of keeping coils clean for efficient heat transfer.
Elliot points out diagnostic tricks like listening for certain sounds that can indicate flashing is occurring due to insufficient liquid supply reaching the metering device. Together, they reiterate the refrigerant states (pressure, temperature, phase) throughout the cycle, reinforcing key concepts through real-world examples.
