The Little Mermaid was a gift to the city of Copenhagen from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen and was unveiled on August 23, 1913. The bronze and granite sculpture is located in the water at Langelinie Pier.
It was based on Hans Christian Andersen's popular legend about a mermaid who sacrifices everything to marry a young, gorgeous prince on land.
She swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea every morning and evening, perched on her rock in the ocean, hoping to get a glimpse of her beloved prince.
I've fallen in love
After seeing a ballet based on the fairy tale at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, Carl Jacobsen fell in love with the character.
The brewer was so taken with the fairy tale and ballet that he commissioned sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a replica.
The brewer was so enthralled by both the fairy tale and the dance that he commissioned a sculpture of the mermaid from sculptor Edvard Eriksen.
A dancer was the inspiration for this piece.
Ballerina Ellen Price, who danced the principal part in the ballet The Little Mermaid at the Royal Theatre in 1909, was the inspiration for the sculpture.
Ellen Price, on the other hand, refused to model naked for artist Edvard Eriksen. Eline Eriksen, Eriksen's wife, posed for The Little Mermaid sculpture.
The mermaid without a head
The little mermaid has been vandalised on multiple occasions. She's had her head shaved twice, her arm sawn off once, and she's had paint spilled on her countless times.
But she is salvaged and restored each time, allowing her to stay in her spot by the ocean and greet visitors to Copenhagen port.
