The Swiss VET sector provides young people with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the labour market. At the same time, it generates a pool of skilled workers for potential employers. Learners enrolled in two-year, three-year or four-year VET programmes spend part of their time attending classes at a vocational school and the remainder of their time doing an apprenticeship at a host company. This combination of classroom instruction and work-based training is referred to as dual-track VET and is the most common form of VET in Switzerland.
Learners have over 230 occupations to choose from. Training content is geared to the needs of the labour market. This close correlation with actual working conditions is one of the main reasons why Switzerland has one of the world‘s lowest youth unemployment rates.
