STORYLINE:
A passenger airplane from Iran with 180 people aboard made an emergency landing at Beijing's Capital Airport on Thursday morning because
of mechanical problems, the government said. No one was injured.
The landing at 9:33 a.m. (0133 GMT) was "due to mechanical problems," the state Xinhua News Agency said, quoting official sources.
Yang Yuanyuan, chief of China's Civil Aviation Bureau, said the problem was with the plane's landing gear, the Chinese Web site Sina.com reported. He said there were no injuries.
There were 154 passengers and 26 crew members aboard the Iran Air IR800 airplane, Xinhua said, quoting the Iran Airlines office in Beijing.
The Tehran-Beijing-Tokyo flight was making a stopover en route to its final destination.
Beijing Airport officials, quoted by the government, said the crew detected a malfunction in the hydraulic pressure system of the landing gear
shortly after taking off from Beijing.
As the plane attempted to return for an emergency landing, the frontal part of the landing gear crashed into the runway, Xinhua said, quoting
airport security chief Lu Changcheng.
