Sydney under a blanket of smoke... the dangerous haze that's hovering over the Austrialian city sent polluiton levels skyrocketing... andleft many of hte city's 5 million residents feeling the sting of the hazarous air:VOX8. SOUNDBITE (English) Vox Pop, no name available:"It's disgusting. I was woken up about 2 o'clock this morning, it's terrible, very difficult to breathe and I don't have any health issues."14. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED SYDNEYSIDER, SAYING: (PART OVERLAID ON SHOT NO. 13) Worst we've ever seen it. Never seen anything like this. Makes for good photos with the sun, but other than that, that's the only good thing about it15. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED SYDNEYSIDER, SAYING: "We look out onto the city, can't see it today. It's terrible."Reaching highly dangerous levels Australian officials warned people to stay inside and avoid excerise...Meteorologists said the smoke is expected to linger and explained why air quality levels where 10 times above the maximum hazardous threashold5. SOUNDBITE (English) Ann Farrell, Bureau of Meteorology:"We've seen quite significant air quality issues associated with that smoke overnight where we've had an inversion, what we call a cap on the atmosphere that's really trapped the air overnight, and trapped that smoke that's come in from nearby fires and so that has really had impacts today."Much of the smoke is coming from bushfires north of the city. The some 60 blazes have already burnt a million hectares in New SOuth Wales. While such bush fires are a seasonal occurence , experts says their early start and the extent of the fires have been exacerbated by 3 years of drought, whcih is thought to have been caused by cli mate change.
