Lesson on Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): Diagnosis, Causes and Treatment. AKI is defined as an abrupt decline in GFR with increases in BUN and creatinine. AKI can have prerenal, renal and postrenal causes. Prerenal causes include decreased blood pressure and/or blood volume to the kidneys. Intrarenal (renal) causes include damage to anatomical structures of the kidney itself. Postrenal causes of AKI include obstruction from calculi, malignancy and BPH.
