South Korea's Ruling Party Leader Calls for Suspension of President Yoon Amid Growing Pressure**
The leader of South Korea’s ruling People Power Party, Han Dong-hoon, called on Friday for President Yoon Suk Yeol to be suspended from duty immediately, citing a "grave danger" to the country. This marks a dramatic shift in Han's stance ahead of an impending impeachment vote in parliament.
Han’s comments came after he claimed to have received "credible evidence" that Yoon ordered the arrest of key political figures during a brief martial law declared on Tuesday night. Han, who had previously opposed impeachment, emphasized that Yoon's continued presidency posed a significant risk to the country. "If President Yoon remains in office, there is a serious threat that such extreme actions could happen again," Han stated.
Yoon's martial law decree, which lasted only a few hours before being overturned by lawmakers, sparked nationwide outrage and calls for impeachment. Despite this, Han clarified that he was not calling for Yoon’s impeachment but suggested a suspension of his powers. He added, “There are various ways to suspend President Yoon’s authority,” without directly calling for removal from office.
Han had previously opposed impeachment, fearing chaos and instability. However, he criticized the main opposition party’s push for impeachment and the perceived risks to the public. He also requested Yoon's resignation from the People Power Party, calling the martial law declaration "unconstitutional."
The martial law move shocked many, including Han, who learned of it through media coverage. Han rushed to the National Assembly to ensure the reversal of the decree, which was struck down unanimously by lawmakers.
The martial law episode has ignited further political instability, with some lawmakers fearing the possibility of another declaration. Yoon is facing mounting calls for resignation as parliament debates the impeachment motion, with a vote expected in the coming days. To succeed, the motion needs a two-thirds majority in the 300-member legislature. The Democratic Party and its allies hold 192 seats, needing at least eight members from Yoon’s party to move the motion forward.
The swift reversal of the martial law highlights South Korea's strong democratic traditions, according to Han, underscoring the country's ability to resolve crises through democratic processes. #desitdown #news #globalnews #SouthKorea’s #governing #party #calls #suspension #Yoon’s
