CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new study has some surprising results about delaying memory loss.
When it comes to boosting your brain, this new study shows exercise might be more powerful than any prescription medicine.
Brain specialists at the Cleveland Clinic say that while previous studies have shown that exercise short-term can help boost the brain and fight forgetfulness, but you may want to maintain those fitness levels long-term. More exercise has now been linked to delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
This study looked at nearly 400 people who had biomarkers for a form of the disease known as autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease, or ADAD. People with ADAD have a 100 percent chance of developing Alzheimer's before age 60.
Participants were divided into groups based on their level of exercise. Researchers found that those who were highly active, meaning they did at least two-and-a-half hours of activities per week, such as walking, swimming, aerobics or running, had better cognition and later onset of Alzheimer's.
While it didn't necessarily prevent them from getting the disease altogether, it did appear to have some influence on when they began to develop memory problems leading to dementia.
