A Malian jihadist has confessed to the 2012 attacks on the ancient city of Timbuktu, becoming the first person to plead guilty at the International Criminal Court. Prosecutors from the permanent war crimes court allege that Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi was a member of the al Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine group, and intentionally directed attacks against nine of Timbuktu's famous mausoleums as well as the 15th Century Sidi Yahia mosque.
