One of the many things I love about traveling is that I get to make mistakes and learn from them to improve future trips! Here is what I learned in Portugal that you should try to avoid.
1) I knew from previous research that Lisbon was hilly and that you should take that into account when you decide to walk somewhere. I didn't listen to this advice enough. We didn't realize but the Airbnb we booked was at one of the high points in Lisbon, close to the castle. While the view and central location was great, we had to climb that hill every time we went out. When your google maps say a 10 minute walk, just keep in mind that it's not a casual stroll in the park. You will be tired, maybe even out of breath.
2) I HATE wearing closed shoes in the summer. I wear sandals everywhere once the weather creeps above 65-70 F. Not only is Lisbon hilly, the cobblestone is extremely slippery going down the hill. I quickly learned the first day that I should stick to my sneakers and hiking sandals with grips (I even slipped with these but it was much easier to catch myself)
3) We visited Lisbon in May and the weather changed throughout the day drastically!! Especially as you get near the shore.
4) We spent 5 days in Lisbon because I met up with my fiancé there so we wanted to have a laid back trip instead of rushing from one place to another. We really should have stayed in Sintra or tried to go to Algarve.
5) Portuguese cuisine is not anything special but the pastries are amazing!!! I regretted not having more.
